Workshop Session 4 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Health and Wellness How Creative Writing Can Help You Get Through Life’s Hardest Moments In this interactive workshop, we will explore how creative writing opens pathways to honesty, discovery, and self-care. Often, when we experience tough times and difficulties, we suppress complicated feelings. We bury our pain. This workshop uses creative writing to explore ways we can unearth buried truths and unburden ourselves from difficult times/experiences. This workshop relies on the premise that humans are natural storytellers—we engage in narrative in our daily lives. Through presentation and guided exercises we will discuss how creative writing becomes an act that allows us to explore secrets and control the narrative, and how, ultimately, that control leads to empowerment. This workshop will equip participants, regardless of background, with exploration tools that can be carried out the workshop and incorporated in our daily lives. Workshop Session 2 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM Skill Building The Invitation to Change Approach: Helping Families Help How can we guide families struggling with substance use? How can we help people support positive change in their loved ones? And how can we use science and kindness together to make a real impact on people’s lives? These are the considerations that informed the creation of the Invitation to Change Approach (ITC), a helping model developed and shared by the Foundation for Change. Built on the three pillars of Understanding, Awareness, and Action, the ITC first illuminates new perspectives on substance use and the process of change; next, creates a foundation of self-awareness to allow willingness to engage with emotional pain; and finally, emphasizes action by teaching behavioral reinforcement and communication skills. These concepts rest on science-backed principles and practices to support those in a change-facilitating role—and on a larger scale, they have the power to combat the pervasive stigmatizing cultural narratives about substance.
