PANEL DISCUSSION Collegiate Recovery Programs and Recovery High School Panel Discussion People in recovery from addiction face many challenges as they re-construct their lives and create a life-long recovery focus. This is not always supported by society and is less supported in the realm of the education experience. There is much focus on maintaining and mitigating the damages of the high school and college experience, which leaves little focus on creating a place within the education system for this people in recovery. While other groups of classically marginalized populations have begun to find a foothold and support within educational settings (e.g., LGBTQ, gender equality, ethnic identities), those in recovery have largely been left out in due to the fact that their needs run counter to the dominant narrative of the high school and college world. Join us for a Panel Discussion with leaders in the High School and Collegiate Recovery Movement and within New Jersey and beyond. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about these valuable resources, the impact on communities and interact with the panelists. View all Peer Summit Series Events

On a community level, the combination of cultural trauma and the personal trauma of its members often result in population-based health inequities. As many of us have worked to address the addiction and overdose epidemics, we have confronted barriers that people and communities face in accessing appropriate care and building recovery capital. A framework of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented systems of care invites us to take a broader approach to recovery and harm reduction as we help people stay alive and get better. Workshop Session 4 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Skill Building Front Line Collaborations: Peer Recovery Support and Law Enforcement Both Peer Recovery Support Services and Law Enforcement are responding on the front lines to the opioid Epidemic, recognizing that substance use disorder impacts the community on multiple levels including public health and public safety. In this session, we will highlight the collaborative approach between peer recovery support services and law enforcement agencies working together, to ensure equitable access to recovery support within the communities they serve. We will look at how the programs are meeting the unique needs of the community, the successes, the challenges, and how a network of professionals are utilizing best practices to reshape the landscape of recovery support accessibility in the state of NJ. With the assistance of federal and state funding, some counties are continuing to operate traditional, arrest-based programs, while others have chosen to proactively link individuals living with substance use disorder to treatment and/or recovery services through non-arrest modules such as mobile vehicles, on-scene response teams, Superior Court or Municipal Court programs, and direct “boots on the ground” outreach to localized areas and to those identified as most at-risk of overdosing. The Panel Discussion is with leaders working within these collaborative programs between peer recovery support services and law enforcement within New Jersey.
