Upcoming Events Contact REGISTER Back to Peer Summit Series Speakers Wil and Jennifer Caton Title Organization Wil and Jennifer Caton started the Bar C Ranch in 2000 when they moved to Clarke County Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have both worked with animals for many years and Jennifer has a degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech. The Bar C Ranch is operated with the idea that is important for people to learn about the animals with whom we share the earth. The Catons hope that by having the opportunity to meet some of these animals personally, people may develop a stronger interest in and sense of responsibility for the world around them. It is their pleasure to share their love and knowledge of animals with people of all ages. All of the animals come from a variety of backgrounds. Many were born on the farm, some come from other farms or zoos and some came to us from rescue organizations or from homes that could no longer keep them. Whatever their history, we love them all and enjoy sharing our lives with them. EVENT Animals Supporting Recovery and Mental Wellness According to the National Institute of Health (2018), research on human-animal interactions is still relatively new although; there have been studies reporting animals can serve as a source of comfort and support. In support of these studies, they have demonstrated that interacting with animals has shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood. For these reasons, we invite you to take immersive and interactive tour with us around the Bar C Ranch, meeting a variety of animals and learning more about each. Sightings may include Llamas, Goats, Kangaroos, Camels, Porcupines, and more! Get a behind the scenes look at life on the farm. It is a source of constant joy to get to know the many different individual personalities and to share these incredible animals with other. We look forward to seeing you there and meeting these friendly faces. View all Peer Summit Series Events

She’s the author of Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma and Paths to Peace , which won the 2009 Furniss Award for “an exceptional contribution to the field of national and international security.” She’s also the co-editor of Creating Military Power. Workshop Session 1 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Current Trends Building Resilience During the Coronavirus Pandemic Our thinking brain and survival brain are at odds during the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, many choices to calm ourselves are actually exacerbating our stress and anxiety. This talk explains this paradox—and offers alternatives to build our resilience. Building on the core principles of my resilience training program, this talk explores how where we direct our attention—consciously or unconsciously—has tremendous ripple effects throughout our brain, nervous system, and body. Thus, by training our attention and adopting simple habits that help our survival brain feel safe, we can teach our thinking brain and survival brain to work together cooperatively. The more they do, the easier it is for us to function effectively during challenges and recover afterward. We can train ourselves to make wise decisions and access choice—even during times of incredible stress, uncertainty, and change. PANEL DISCUSSION Collegiate Recovery Programs and Recovery High School Panel Discussion People in recovery from addiction face many challenges as they re-construct their lives and create a life-long recovery focus. This is not always supported by society and is less supported in the realm of the education experience. There is much focus on maintaining and mitigating the damages of the high school and college experience, which leaves little focus on creating a place within the education system for this people in recovery. While other groups of classically marginalized populations have begun to find a foothold and support within educational settings (e.g., LGBTQ, gender equality, ethnic identities), those in recovery have largely been left out in due to the fact that their needs run counter to the dominant narrative of the high school and college world. Join us for a Panel Discussion with leaders in the High School and Collegiate Recovery Movement and within New Jersey and beyond. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about these valuable resources, the impact on communities and interact with the panelists. View all Peer Summit Series Events

DAY 1 PM WORKSHOP Emerging Use of Genetics in Successfully Preventing & Treating Opioid Use Disorders Clinicians understand there is a genetic link to the development of Substance Use Disorders in that family history is present in upwards of 60% of those treated, even when ruling our environmental factors. Medical studies are increasingly able to identify genetic markers that indicate greater susceptibility to development of SUD’s. Increasingly, protocols are being developed to identify and target (through genetic testing) the unique ‘gene sequence’ of an individual in order to treat the identifiers associated with higher risk of developing SUD’s, thus mitigating the significant genetic risk factors. This workshop will explore: Challenges related to the battle against opiate misuse, the opiate epidemic, and treatment protocols for opiate use disorders The latest industry practices, including research into the role of genetics in preventing and treating Opiate Use Disorders Emerging urgent care services in addiction and behavioral health RENEWAL/CEU CREDIT This workshop is approved for 1-hour Renewal Credit/CEU for: IC&RC/NJ-AP Certification Board | NAADAC | and DOE. Workshop Session 4 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Skill Building Front Line Collaborations: Peer Recovery Support and Law Enforcement Both Peer Recovery Support Services and Law Enforcement are responding on the front lines to the opioid Epidemic, recognizing that substance use disorder impacts the community on multiple levels including public health and public safety. In this session, we will highlight the collaborative approach between peer recovery support services and law enforcement agencies working together, to ensure equitable access to recovery support within the communities they serve. We will look at how the programs are meeting the unique needs of the community, the successes, the challenges, and how a network of professionals are utilizing best practices to reshape the landscape of recovery support accessibility in the state of NJ. With the assistance of federal and state funding, some counties are continuing to operate traditional, arrest-based programs, while others have chosen to proactively link individuals living with substance use disorder to treatment and/or recovery services through non-arrest modules such as mobile vehicles, on-scene response teams, Superior Court or Municipal Court programs, and direct “boots on the ground” outreach to localized areas and to those identified as most at-risk of overdosing. The Panel Discussion is with leaders working within these collaborative programs between peer recovery support services and law enforcement within New Jersey.
