Beyond Substance Use Disorder: Understanding Compulsivity Across the Behavioral Addiction Spectrum

In clinical practice, mental health and substance use concerns rarely occur in isolation. Clients who seek support for one set of symptoms often experience additional, co-occurring challenges that can impact overall functioning and recovery. These conditions may emerge over time or become more apparent as treatment progresses. This advanced training is designed to help clinicians strengthen their ability to recognize and respond to co-occurring compulsive and behavioral health conditions. Participants will explore current presentations of gambling disorder, internet gaming disorder (condition for further study), and compulsive sexual behaviors, with a focus on how these concerns intersect with substance use and mental health treatment. The course will introduce evidence-based screening and assessment tools, while also deepening participants’ understanding of how co-occurring behavioral addictions influence case conceptualization and treatment planning. By the end of the training, clinicians will be better equipped to identify these patterns and integrate more comprehensive, effective interventions into their practice.
