Private Practice

Joy Johnson is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Atlanta, GA and the author of The Self-Compassion Workbook. Several years ago, Joy hit her biggest burnout yet and considered leaving the mental health field altogether. Self-compassion helped her navigate this burnout and eventually, build her own therapy practice specializing in helping hardworking folks learn to take care of themselves so they, too, can continue their important work in sustainable ways. Her passion for this work is rooted in the powerful healing it has brought to her own life and the lives of her clients.

Workshop Session 1

Self-Compassion for Helping Professionals: How to Keep Showing Up without Burning Out

Working in recovery can be incredibly rewarding. Peers with lived recovery experience are especially able to offer the empathy and practical wisdom needed to help others navigate their own recovery. However, this work is also difficult and can be draining. Peers may feel a heavy responsibility to help those that they relate to so closely and may struggle to let themselves “off the hook” when they feel their help doesn’t yield the ideal results. Self-compassion is the key to mitigating burnout and showing up not only in our work, but also in our personal lives, in sustainable ways. Sometimes, people in helping professions can be the biggest skeptics of self-compassion, often valuing caring for others over ourselves. But if you’ve been in the field long enough, you likely already know how quickly that can lead to burnout and make it difficult to show up in the ways you most want both for your clients/peers and for your own loved ones.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • The proven benefits of self-compassion based on research

  • Practical strategies anyone can use to increase their self-compassion levels – with time to practice & ask questions during the session

  • How to become your own ally and, in turn, more available for the amazing work you do in the world!
