The Center for Prevention and Counseling (CFPC) is a non-profit agency that has been providing advocacy, education, counseling and referrals since 1973. CFPC fosters and encourages community collaborations in order to strengthen its prevention and recovery efforts.

In order to serve our community and offer high-quality programs and services, we:

  • Use proven prevention and evidence-based curricula
  • Provide client-centered counseling through our DAS-licensed out-patient program
  • Provide youth with programs to increase the ability to make healthy life choices
  • Provide services to DUI clients in two sites within Sussex County
  • Maintain active memberships in many Sussex County and statewide committees
  • Maintain an extensive multi-media resource center
  • Provide counselors, educators and social workers with CEU’s through our School of Addiction and Health Studies
  • Maintain a full range of no-cost services through grant and foundation funding and charge reasonable rates for fee-for- service programs

We also provide the following additional programs:

A Center for Youth (CFY)
CFY is an after-school program, open to students in grades three, four or five. Mentor relationships, provided by youth volunteers and our staff, offer a supportive environment for students.

Alcohol & Other Drug-Related Birth Defects Prevention
Educational presentations about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and related topics can be scheduled.  

CHANGES
CHANGES serves DUI offenders and others that face legal consequences due to substance abuse. This group program focuses on alcohol and other drug education and early intervention treatment.  

Coalition Mentoring Initiative
Through a federal grant, CFPC mentors other communities through the process of developing a Drug-Free Communities Coalition. 

Community Outreach and Education
Through CFPC’s Speakers Bureau, professionals, parents, civic and church groups, youth and others receive education on a variety of topics including: how drug use affects families and communities, effective prevention strategies, asset-building, positive parenting, current drugs trends, suicide prevention and related topics.

Community Partnership for Tobacco Prevention
Funded by the New Jersey’s Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program, this program provides health education, raises awareness about NJ’s Smoke-free Air Act and works to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke. CFPC also coordinates an eight-county effort to address the issues relating to diabetes and smoking.

Community Trials Intervention Project
This project, led by community stakeholders, is being implemented in Hopatcong to reduce high-risk drinking patterns among all age groups, thereby decreasing DUI’s, violence and binge drinking.

Counseling and Evaluations
CFPC is licensed by the NJ Div. of Addiction Services as an outpatient and intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment center. CFPC’s licensed counselors offer individual or family counseling and substance abuse evaluations that meet school and court mandates.

DEFY – Drug Education for Youth
DEFY is a youth-led, peer-focused anti-drug coalition with members from high schools in Sussex County.

El Refugio
El Refugio is an innovative program serving Sussex County’s growing Latino population by connecting them to services to help them make Sussex County home.

Financial Stability Project
This project is a unique collaboration between the United Way of Sussex County, NORWESCAP and others that work together to increase the financial literacy and stability of county residents.
 
Girls Circle
Girls Circle is a 10-week program designed to meet the unique challenges of girls. 

Information/Referral
CFPC’s professional staff offers referrals to detoxification programs, long- and short-term treatment, 12-step meetings and other needed supports.
Juvenile Detention Center Education
CFPC’s counselors engage the incarcerated adolescents in an educational group addressing substance abuse issues. 

Life Skills Education for Youth
Through grants from Sussex County, OFBI and other sources, youth ages 10-21 receive life skills education.

Life Skills Training
This grant provides an intensive educational program created by Dr. Botvin to high-risk elementary and middle school youth. The program meets during and after school, providing youth with skill-building activities aimed at reducing their risk of engaging in high-risk behaviors. 

Mentoring Plus
Children ages six through 18 are matched with volunteer mentors who meet with their “mentees” in community settings, schools and after-school programs.

Partnership for Healthy Adolescents
The Partnership is dedicated to improving the health of adolescents in Sussex County. Partners meet regularly to assess needs and plan appropriate programs.

Phoenix Project
This 14-week program utilizes the Phoenix Curriculum to give children tools by which they can improve decision-making and achieve self-efficacy.

Prevention Education for Incarcerated Adults
A certified counselor provides relevant prevention education to men and women incarcerated in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility as well as to adults on probation.

Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (REBEL)
REBEL is a youth-driven tobacco control movement designed to prevent and reduce the spread of tobacco use among adolescents and other community members.

School of Health and Addiction Studies
CFPC offers workshops for CADC (Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor), CPS (Certified Prevention Specialist), LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), Social Workers and teachers.

Strategic Prevention Framework Project
This project, designed to reduce consequences from the use of alcohol and other drugs among 18-25 year olds in Sussex County, involves law enforcement, businesses and young adults.

STOP (Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking)
This Federally-funded project implements strategies to reduce underage drinking by changing local attitudes, norms and laws.

Strengthening Families/Families Night Out Project
The 14-week program is a family education program for parents and their children to create strong family bonds while having fun together.

Sussex County Coalition for Healthy & Safe Families (SCCHSF)
SCCHSF is dedicated to reducing the incidence of underage alcohol use and illicit drug use, thereby reducing the incidence of teen violence and the transmission of HIV/AIDS.

Youth Leadership Institute
The “7 Habits of Effective Teens” and financial literacy concepts are taught to teens and preteens by implementing innovative, interactive and creative activities.
