Atlantic Prevention Resources (APR) prides itself on providing the best substance abuse and violence prevention and education programming in Atlantic County. All of APR’s programs are based upon measurable outcomes and are designed specifically for the intended audience using recent research.

Prevention programs are available for any age group, from pre-school-aged children to senior adults, and most are free of charge. As a public service, APR also provides free, confidential referrals and information to individuals and families suffering from the effects of substance abuse.

APR’s prevention and recovery resource center is available to the community and provides Atlantic County residents with a wealth of information on substance abuse, violence and many related issues.

APR brings the following NJPN programs to Atlantic County:

  • Atlantic County Prevention Resource
  • Childhood Drinking (CD) Coalition
  • Disabilities and Addiction Project
  • Faith-based Initiative
  • Jason’s Message: Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Abuse Prevention
  • Parents Who Host Lose the Most
  • Supporting New Jersey’s Military Families
  • Take Control of Your Health
  • Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE)

We also provide the following additional programs:

Classroom Prevention Programs:

Forest Friends
This six-session puppet program is designed to teach and reinforce life skills associated with future ability to resist substance abuse. With an audience of K-2 students, the program addresses the need to begin prevention in the early years.

Life Skills Training Program
This substance abuse prevention program is for elementary and middle school students and is based on more than 20 years of research, which has solid evidence of effectiveness. APR Life Skills facilitators have been trained and certified through the training program designed by Dr. Gilbert Botvin, the developer of the Life Skills Training program.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a comprehensive, school-wide program designed for use in elementary, middle or junior high schools. Its goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among school children and to improve peer relations at school. The program has been found to reduce bullying among children, improve the social climate of classrooms, and reduce related behaviors, such as vandalism, truancy and substance abuse.

Peer Leadership/Natural Helpers Training
This eight- to ten-session program is designed to educate a core group of natural leaders about the consequences of unhealthy risks and choices and teach them the communication, decision-making and stress reduction tools shown to reduce incidence of substance abuse.

Treatment Services:

In 2008, APR became licensed by the New Jersey Division of Addiction Services to provide outpatient and intensive outpatient alcohol and drug counseling for adults. Services include interventions, initial assessments, individual, group and family counseling, and recovery support (aftercare) services.

Other programs and services:

Community Partnership for Tobacco Prevention
Funded by the N.J. Dept. of Health and Senior Services, this program provides health education programs, raises awareness about New Jersey’s Smoke-free Air Act and works to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke.

Children Are People
We provide 8-12 session support groups for children affected by the alcoholism or other substance abuse by a parent or other caregiver.

The Ensign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers
The HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers seeks to promote the use of designated drivers and increase general awareness about drunk driving. The program is a collaborative effort between businesses, licensed alcohol beverage stablishments, municipalities, police departments and other law enforcement officials, community groups, schools, colleges and universities, parents and the general public. The program is operated by APR on behalf of the John Elliott Foundation as a public service.

Individual and Group Dynamics
This program utilizes a small group format to impart skills that enhance relationship to self and others. The program is designed to impart social skills and teach communication skills that improve ability to sustain healthy relationships.

Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (REBEL)
This youth-driven tobacco control movement is designed to prevent and reduce the spread of tobacco use among adolescents and other community members.

Strengthening Families
The goal of Strengthening Families is to prevent substance abuse in youth by helping them to build skills and by giving parents more tools to help their children become responsible young adults. The program also helps families improve the relationship between parents and youth and decreases the level of family conflict.

Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) Services
These services provide individual and/or group counseling and education for high-risk students. APR provides a certified SAC on a consultant basis on a daily or hourly basis in several schools.
